Casting of Bhava chart

What is meant by Bhava or Houses? We have divided the Ecliptic into 12 parts and named it as Signs. We named it from Aries to Pisces. The deg. and minutes of a sign which is rising at the eastern horizon at the time of birth is known as Lagna or Ascendant. So Ascendant can not be at the middle of the sign always and many a times it is not. If the 28th degree of a sign is rising at the time of birth which sign should be called as ascendant and what is its limits. We consider the 28th degree as center point and take 15 degrees both side of it as its limit. Then it automatically covers some part of two signs. We call it 1st house. Or Ascendant house. The meaning of Sanskrit word Bhava means “arising on earth” . That means the 30 degrees portion of ecliptic at the time of birth. From there each 30 deg. portion is named as 2nd house, 3rd house etc up to 12th house. That means the 30 degrees division of the ecliptic which is different from the sign is called Bhava or House.

Since it is different from sign we cast separate chart for this known as Bhava chart. We know that ecliptic is egg shaped or elliptical. We also know that speed of the earth changes as it is near or far from Sun. But for a given day or when earth is at given point on ecliptic there is no change in its speed. So there is one argument that starting from Ascendant point ecliptic can be divided into 12 equal parts of 30 degrees. But Great astrologers and mathematicians like Shripati and Keshava etc argued that though there is no change in the speed of the earth for a given day, since ecliptic is elliptical given point or place on earth will not take equal time to cross the signs portion of the ecliptic. That is Lagna or ascendant will take different times to cross different signs. This bhava division is based on daily motion of the earth with respect to signs. That is by time division with respect to sign it will not impart same angle at the center of the ecliptic. That is this argument is more logical and realistic, so let us follow the Shripati system and cast the Bhava chart.

We know that the deg and min. of ascendant we calculate as discussed (in Sign part-4) is the center point of Lagna Bhava or first house. To find out other houses ecliptic is divided into 4 parts. Exact opposite point of Ascendant is known as 7th house mid point. Exact opposite point of 10th house is known as 4th house mid point. Thus ecliptic is divided into 4 parts. Then we have to find out other 3 houses in each quadrant. But for this we have to find out the mid point of 10th house.  Here we must remember that for a given time 10th house remains the same around the world. That is for an ascendant at 8 AM of local time 10th house becomes same for all places. The 8.AM of local time may happen when we consider it with GMT or Slandered time of a country. It should not be confused.  So it can be easily found out with the help of Table of Tenth house.

But let us learn how to find out 10th house, if you have no table of 10th houses. This old method is not so accurate because many mean values are used in this method.

First we have to find out the duration of the day or night for the given day. Then we have to find out the time elapsed at the time of birth and time remaining in the day or night. Here larger portion is known as Unnata and smaller portion is known as Natha. E.g. If duration of the day is 29 ghati and 20 vighati and Sun rise is 6-27 AM and Sun set is 6-11 PM. And time of birth is 2-27 Pm elapsed time after Sun rise is 20 ghati. And remaining duration of the day is 9ghati and 20 vighati. So here time elapsed that is 20 ghati is Unnatha and remaining 9-20 ghati becomes Natha. Then we have to find out the half duration of the day or night. In this case 29-20/2 = 14-40 ghati becomes half duration of Daytime. It should be deducted in Unnatha time. That is 20-00 – 14-40 = 5-20 Ghati. It is known as Natha ghati. If we find out the Ascendant for this time, for the day the deg. and min we get is known as Nataamsha. We have to add it to the longitude of the Sun for the day, if birth is after mid day and up to mid night. We have to deduct it if the birth is after mid night and before mid day. We get longitude of the 10th house. For E.g. let us consider 12-10-2013. It is 26th day of Virgo month.  The duration of ascendant for 00 deg. latitude and 82.5 E longitudes.

Duration of Ascendant

Ghati  —Vighati

Vighati  293

4          38

4           59

5           23

5          23

4          59

4         38

       4-     53

      5-      17

     5-      23

     5-     03

     4-     40

    4-       36

The Ascendant duration of Virgo is 276 Vighati. That means during this month ( 30 days) Sun traverses 276 vhgati’s. At the day of birth 25 days elapsed. So let us find out how much he has traversed in 25 days. That is  276×25/30= 230 Vighati. So the remaining portion of Virgo on 26th day is 276-230= 46 Vighati.

That means at our birth time ( 2-27 Pm or 20 ghati after Sun rise or 20×60=320 vighati)  320 Vighati, the sign rising is Virgo 46 vi.gha. Libra 293 vi.gha. = 339 Vi.gha. This is more than our birth time. So Libra must be rising. The remaining part of Libra is 339-320= 19 Vi.gha. or 19/10 ( 10 vighati makes one deg.) =1deg. 54 min Or 28deg. 06 min of Libra.  it is nathamsha. We have to add it to the longitude of the Sun for the day. That becomes the middle point of 10th house.

Now let us apply it to our standered horoscope. That is  18-5-2004, Birth time 11-15 A.M. Place Bangalore. ( Panchanga details are Tarana samvatsara, Vasantha Rutu, Uttarayana, Vaishakhamasa, ( 4th day of Taurus month) Krishnapaksha, Amavasya, Moon star Bharani , Shobhana yoga, Chatushpada karana. Sun rise 5-57 AM Sun set 18-35 PM. ) The duration of the day is 18-35 – 5-57 = 12hrs 38 min. Time elapsed after sun rise at birth is 11-15 – 5-57= 5hrs, 18min. or 152.5 vighati. Half of the duration of the day is 12-38/2 = 6hrs 19min. If we deduct it duration of the day 12-38 – 5-18 = 7Hr -20Min. it is Unnatha for the day. If we deduct half day in it we get natha ghati.  That is 7-20 – 6-19 .= 1hr 1min. is nathaghati. It is Taurus month its duration is 317.5 vighati. Day elapsed is 3 Taurus elapsed is 317.5×3/30=31.75 vighati. The remaining Taurus is 317.5 – 31.75 = 285.75 vighati. Our time of birth is 152.5 vighati.  That means ascendant falls in Taurus itself. If we deduct 152.5 in Taurus remain for the day 285.75 we get Taurus remain at birth. That is  285.75 – 152.5=133.25 Vighati or 133.5/10 = 13 deg. 20 min. it is Nathamsha. So we have to deduct it in days Sun’s Longitude because birth is before noon. Sun’s longitude of the day is 3deg.42 min of Taurus. If we deduct 13 deg, 20 min in it we get 20 deg, 22 min of Aries. It is our 10th house middle point longitude.

If we find out the 10th house using the table of Ascendant. We have to find out the Sidereal time. It is 2Hr 37Min 31 sec ( see Sign part -5). To this we have to find out 10th house. For 2Hr, 36 Min it is Os18Deg, 26Min For remaining 1Min 31sec it is 24 Mi. So the Actual 10th house middle longitude  is 0S 18Deg. 50Min. That is 18Deg. 50Min of Aries.

Reason for this difference is in old method we use mean values. They have considered the Lanka as middle of earth. But we know that even the Matara the southern most city of Shrilanka is at 5 deg North. I have given the ascendants for 0 deg Latitude and 82.5 deg East. But still some difference persists.

Now let us cast the Bhava Chart Taking the Ascendant as 18 deg.05 min of Cancer. 10th House as 18 deg. 50 min of Aries.

Subject Sign Deg. Min Sec.
Ascendant 03 18 05 00
10th house 00 18 50 00
Difference ( Ascendant-10th house) It is the total limits of 3 signs.  (10,11,12) 02 29 15 00
So the limit of one sign ( divide by 3) 00 29 45 00
Add this value to the long. of 10th house.=11th house. 01 18 35 00
Add the value of one house to 11th house.( 00-29-45)=12th house. 02 18 20 00
Add the same value to the 12th house gives 1st house. If it tallies your calculation is correct. 03 18 05 00
Add 6 signs to 10th house =4th house. 06 18 50 00
Deduct 1st house from 4th house. (2,3,4)sign 03 00 45 00
Limit of 3signs/3 = limit of one signs. 00 30 15 00
Add this  30d-15m to 1st house =2nd house 04 18 20 00
Add to 2nd house =3rd house. 05 18 35 00
Add to 3rd house =4th house. If it tallies your calculations correct. 06 18 50 00
Add 6 signs to Ascendant get 7th sign. 09 18 05 00
Deduct 4th sign in 7th sign limit of ( 5,6,7) signs. 02 29 15 00
Limit of one sign 00 29 45 00
Add this 29-45 to 4th sign=5th sign. 07 18 35 00
Add to 5th sign =6th sign. 08 18 20 00
Add to 6th sign =7th sign. If it tallies your calculation correct. 09 18 05 00
Deduct 7th house in 10th house. If not possible add 12 signs and deduct. 03 00 45 00
Limit of one sign. 01 00 15 00
Add it to 7th house =8th house. 10 18 20 00
Add it to 8th house =9th house. 11 18 35 00
Add it to 9th house = 10 th house. If it tallies your calculation is correct. 00 18 50 00

Like this we get the middle points of all 12 houses. But we cannot place the planets merely by knowing the middle of the houses. We require the beginning and ending degrees of each house. For that we have to add middle point of two houses and divide it by 2 we get the ending and starting points of those two houses respectively. So let us first make a table of middle point of 12 houses to avoid confusion.

Houses Middle of the house.
1st house 03-18-05
2nd house 04-18-20
3rd house 05-18-35
4th house 06-18-50
5th house 07-18-35
6th house 08-18-20
7th house 09-18-05
8th house 10-18-20
9th house 11-18-35
10th house 00-18-50
11th house 01-18-35
12th house 02-18-20

With the help of above table let us find out starting and ending point of each house in tabular form.

House Starting Middle point Ending point
12th +1st house

(2-18-20+ 3-18-05=6-06-25/2)=

3-03-12.5 1st house

03-03-12.5 3-18-05 1st +2nd House

2nd house 04-03-12.5 04-18-20 05-03-27.5
3rd house 05-03-27.5 05-18-35 06-03-42.5
4th house 06-03-42.5 06-18-50 07-03-42.5
5th house 07-03-42.5 07-18-35 08-03-27.5
6th house 08-03-27.5 08-18-20 09-03-12.5
7th house 09-03-12.5 09-18-05 10-03-12.5
8th house 10-03-12.5 10-18-20 11-03-27.5
9th house 11-03-27.5 11-18-35 00-3-42.5
10th house 00-03-42.5 00-18-50 1-03-42.5
11th house 01-03-42.5 01-18-35 02-03-27.5
12th house 02-03-27.5 02-18-20 03-03-12.5

Using the above table let us cast the Bhava chart for our Natal chart.

Importance of Bhava chart and the difference between Bhava and Sign chart: We have discusses the characteristics and division of Signs in Sign part-4 and 5. Each sign including the stars in it influences the human life independently. This is the importance of Natal ( Sign)chart. But Bhava chart has no direct influence independently on human life. But it speaks about the body parts, his family members, social contacts, status etc.  ( like education, profession, diseases, friends and foes). We call it Bhava Karakatvas ( One that is responsible for some things or action). Let us discuss it in detail in next writings.

If we consider the limits of a bhava one thing we clearly notice. Bhava is spread over two signs. It rarely limits to one sign. That means The stars and signs comprising a bhava, planets in it influence the socio economic things, and bodily factors of which that bhava speaks. For our convenience we place the bhava also in Rashi chart or Natal chart format.  But it is not the correct representation of Bhava chart. For e.g. In Bhava chart we place Venus in Taurus but actually he is in Gemini. That means he is under the influence of Taurus and Gemini and the star Mrugashira.  Some times a planet can be placed in the same sign in Natal as well as Bhava chart e.g. Mercury, but he is under the influence of Pisces and Aries and the star Ashvini. Because the limits of Mercury is 30 degrees, and the 8-12 is the center point. And limits of star is 13-20 deg. We must keep in mind all these factors while delineating a horoscope. So it requires a great concentration and endurance, and sustaining capacity.
