Classification of Signs

We have seen that elliptic is divided into 12 parts and called as signs. These signs are surrounded by meteors. These meteors refract the Suns light. So we can see that signs are covered by some or the other colour. These colours have different energies or wave lengths. We also learned earlier (in Signs Part-1) that these signs are allotted to the lord ship of different planets. According to Indian Astrology’s presumption, there are 27 stars (actually 27 constellations) that have effect on earth. Since the ecliptic is divided into 12 parts, each part (sign) spans 30 degrees, and covers 2 full stars and part of the 3rd star. Any planet placed in the sign also influences the sign’s qualities.

So the qualities of a sign is the combined effect of all these. Our saints determined that, the constellation of the stars in a particular sign has a particular shape and the overall shape, when all the stars within a sign are combined, describes most of the qualities of that sign. For eg: Aries has Ashvini and Bharani. Ashvini is triangle in shape and Bharani has a Pot shape. When these two stars are combined, they have attributed the overall shape to a Ram’s shape. Ram’s life cycle approximately explains  the qualities of Aries.

All 12 signs also have been given a shape as described below.

  1. Aries (Ram)
  2. Taurus (oxen)
  3. Gemini (both male & female qualities)
  4. Cancer (Crab)
  5. Leo (Lion)
  6. Virgo (Female in a boat)
  7. Libra (Man holding the balance)
  8. Scorpio (Scorpion)
  9. Sagittarius (Lower part animal and Upper part human being holding a bow and arrow)
  10. Capricorn (Crocodile)
  11. Aquarius (man holding a pot)
  12. Pisces (two fish with heads in opposite directions)

I) Let us first consider how the signs are classified. Then let us consider the meaning of this classification and the results, which describes the qualities of the sign. The basic classification is by Satva, Rajo, and Tamo gunas – based on gunas influenced by each signs (learn more about these gunas in Karma Siddhananta part 1 and Signs part 3).

  1. Satva guna Signs are: Cancer, Leo, Sagittarius, Pisces (that is Moon, Sun and Jupiter’s lordship signs)
  2. Rajo guna Signs: Aries, Taurus, Virgo, Libra (that is two signs of Venus  and one sign each of Mars and Mercury – please note these are called moolatrikona signs, which I will explain in Planets section)
  3. Tamo guna Signs: Gemini, Scorpio, Capricorn and Aquarius (that is two signs of Saturn and one each of Mars and Mercury)

II) The signs are also classified according to lordship of Five elements over them.

  1. Air (Vayu) Tatva signs: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
  2. Fire (Agni) Tatva signs: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
  3. Water (Jala) Tatva signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces.
  4. Earth (Pruthvi) Tatva signs: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn.

Please note no sign is allotted to Akasha (space) tatva.

III) These Signs according to the lordship of Five elements, are classified into  known as Chaturvidha Purushartha (four fold duties of Man). I will explain it in the next chapter.

  1. Vayu tatva signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) are called Kama (desire) signs
  2. Agni tatva signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) are called Dharma (truthfulness) signs
  3. Jala Tatva signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) are called Moksha (ultimate aim) signs
  4. Pruthvi tatva signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) are called Artha (fulfillment of desire) signs

IV) On the same lines, the signs governed by these tatva’s are allotted Chaturvarnas (four type of works they perform). I will explain it in the next chapter.

  1. Jala tatva (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) – Brahmins (intellectual class)
  2. Agni tatva signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) – Kshatriya (warriors)
  3. Pruthvi tatva signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) – Vaishya (businessmen)
  4. Vayu tatva signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) – Shudra (labourers)

V) Again each Tatva signs are classified into moveable, fixed and dual (both moveable and fixed) signs

  1. Vayu tatva: Libra – moveable, Aquarius – fixed, Gemini – dual signs
  2. Agni tatva: Aries – moveable, Leo – fixed, Sagittarius – dual signs
  3. Jala tatva: Cancer – moveable, Scorpio – fixed, Pisces – dual signs
  4. Pruthvi tatva:  Capricorn – moveable, Taurus – fixed, Virgo – dual signs.

VI) They also noticed that in each tatva, there are three categories of matter, and classified it as Dhathu (lifeless matter – can exist in solid, liquid or gaseous forms), Moola (plant – immoveable but having life), Jeeva (living being – moveable with life) accordingly

  1. Vayu tatva: Libra – dhatu, Aquarius – moola, Gemini – jeeva
  2. Agni tatva: Aries – dhatu, Leo – moola, Sagittarius – jeeva
  3. Jala tatva: Cancer – dhatu, Scorpio – moola, Pisces – jeeva
  4. Pruthvi tatva:  Capricorn – dhatu, Taurus – moola, Virgo – jeeva

Please note here moveable signs are allotted Dhatu, fixed signs are allotted Moola, and dual signs are allotted Jeeva.

VII) Starting from Aries these signs are classified as Male and Female signs (alternatively in order). They are also called Positive and Negative signs or odd and even signs (alternatively in order).

VIII) These signs are classified as signs having strength in Day or in Night.

  1. Signs gaining strength in Day are : Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Aquarius, Pisces.
  2. Signs gaining strength in Night are: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Sagittarius, Capricorn.

Here I want to make a remark. Leo, Virgo, Libra are the Moola trikona signs of planets which are strong during day, namely Sun, Mercury, and Venus. But Jupiter who is also strong during day with moola trikona in Sagittarius is left out. Similarly Planets strong during night Moon, Mars, have moola trikona in Taurus and Aries, but Saturn who is strong in night, having moola trikona in Aquarius is left out. However, I believe that is it might be a mistake that was caused in an effort to complete the verses (shlokas), in order to conform to a particular chandas (prosody), which might have been spoiled partly over a long period of time in preservation. However, if we interchange Sagittarius and Capricorn for Aquarius and Pisces, they get included in the right order consistent with the rest of the classification and is also more logical.

IX) They have also described the colors to the signs as it appeared to them.

  1. Aries – Blood red
  2. Taurus – Reddish white
  3. Gemini – Light Green
  4. Cancer- Pink
  5. Leo – White with orange mix
  6. Virgo – Multiple colors (greenish)
  7. Libra – blueish white
  8. Scorpio – Yellow
  9. Sagittarius – Orange
  10. Capricorn – Mixed colors (blueish)
  11. Aquarius – Gray
  12. Pisces – Yellowish white

X) According to the shape they have given to the signs, they have classified them as with four, two, or multiple legged signs.

  1. Chatushpada signs (with four legs – animals): Aries, Taurus, Leo, Sagittarius, Capricorn.
  2. Dwipada signs (two legged – human beings) : Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Aquarius.
  3. Jalachara signs (Aqua marine): Cancer, Pisces
  4. Bahupada signs (Multi legged signs – insects): Scorpio.

XI) Signs are classified also according to how they arise – called Prushtodaya, Shirshodaya, Ubhayodaya.

  1. Prushtodaya (rising from hind) : Aries, Taurus, Cancer, Sagittarius, Capricorn.
  2. Shirshodaya (rising from head) : Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Aquarius.
  3. Ubhayodaya (rising from both): Pisces.

XII) These signs are allotted with Vata, Pitha, kapha, the trigunas (as described in Ayurveda). But it seems there is no unanimity regarding this.

  1. Vata Signs (windy): Taurus, (Libra,) Capricorn, (Aquarius), Virgo.
  2. Pitha signs (bile): Aries, Leo, Sagittarius.
  3. Kapha Signs (phlegm):  Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces.
  4. All the trigunas: Gemini. Prashara include Libra and Aquarius here.

XIII) They have divided the body into 12 parts and allotted to 12 signs,Starting from Aries.  called (Kalapurusha chakra)

  1. Aries – Head
  2. Taurus – Face
  3. Gemini – Neck
  4. Cancer – Chest with shoulders (Upper part)
  5. Leo – Heart (Lower part)
  6. Virgo – Stomach( upper part)
  7. Libra – stomach( lower part)
  8. Scorpio – Genitals
  9. Sagittarius – Thigh
  10. Capricorn – Knee
  11. Aquarius – Ankle
  12. Pisces – Foot

XIV) They also prescribe that for some signs some part of the body may be weak.

  1. Blind signs (kuruda rashi): Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo
  2. Deaf signs (kiwudu rashi): Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn
  3. Limper signs (padaheena rashi): Aquarius, Pisces.
  4. Dumb signs( Mooka): Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces.

XV) They have also prescribed the ability for progeny to these signs.

  1. Barren signs (bhanja rashi): Aries, Gemini, Leo, Virgo.
  2. Half barren signs (ardha bhanja rashi): Taurus, Libra, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius.
  3. Fruitful signs (phala bharitha rashi): Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces.

XVI) They have also allotted lordship of Directions to these signs.

  1. East: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
  2. South: Taurus, Capricorn, Virgo
  3. West: Libra, Aquarius, Gemini
  4. North: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

However, the corner signs for each direction are allotted sub directions i.e. which comes in-between that sign and its next sign. Eg: Gemini is West its Next sign cancer is North. So Gemini gets the ruler ship over North-West. The following signs have lord ship over the sub directions, as follows

  1. Gemini – Northwest ( In another Opinion South East)
  2. Virgo – Southwest
  3. Sagittarius – Southeast ( In another openion North West)
  4. Pisces – Northeast

All the above classifications are used as the basis for predictions. If we become acquainted with these classifications thoroughly, it becomes easy for predictions.
