CASTING OF HOROSCOPE
We first consider casting of horoscope using the Ephemeris which is most accurate method. We know that Indian Charts are classified as mainly South Indian style and North Indian style. To make it more accurate sidereal time is used. So first let us understand what Sidereal time is. Using a fixed star we count the time taken by earth to complete one round along its own axis. Today at place where we can see the star in the night, tomorrow also almost at the same time we can see the star there. But we know the speed of the earth is varying. But since we use a far off star as fixed point this time not varies much. According to sidereal time a day is equal to 23 hours, 56 minutes, 4.0916 seconds. One year is equal to 365.2422 days.
In a chart we first fix the Ascendant. First let us understand what Ascendant is. Ascendant is a point in a sign which is rising at the eastern horizon at the time of birth. We consider it an important point. Because immediately after birth child opens up itself to the cosmic energy of the Universe. This Universal cosmic energy is believed to have enormous strength to enter the child’s head through the hole called “Brahma randra” and influences it ( makes changes) permanently. That means child’s center of brain becomes one with cosmic energy. That is the meaning of Lagna in sanskrit. It is also believed that this influence affects the child life long. So it is given utmost importance in Indian Astrology. But we know that boundries of the horizon changes place to place. That is why place of birth is also playing an important role in casting of Horoscope.
Now let us consider a child born in a particular place at known correct time. I will take Date 18-5-2004, Time: IST -11-15 AM, Place: Bangalore.
First step is we have to convert the time into sidereal time.
|1||18-5-2004 The sidereal time is available in a book called table of Ascendants. Time is given for Noon or at 12 PM. ( N.C.Lahiri)||03||41||56|
|2||From this we have to deduct Year Correction, it is due to change of position of the star. For 2004||00||00||44|
|4||Place correction for Sidereal time for Bangalore we must add it. +||00||00||02|
|5||Sidereal time of Bangalore at 12 Noon for 18-5-2004 is.||03||41||14|
|6||Standered time of Birth||11||15||00|
|7||For converting it to local time of Bangalore we have to deduct, (because Bangalore is in west of IST by 4 deg, 54 min.) _||00||19||36|
|8||Local time at Birth for Bangalore.||10||55||24|
|9||Difference between Noon and local Time of birth.
(12-0 -10-55-24)For sidereal timeis given for noon.
|10||Birth time is before noon. So we have deducted the time difference in sidereal time (for difference in hours to noon). _||00||00||11|
|11||Real difference between Noon and Birth time.||01||04||25|
|12||Local sidereal time (3-41-56) – (1-4-25) Since birth is before Noon it is to be deducted.||02||37||31|
|13||According to Table of Ascendants for Bangalore’s 12deg 58min North Latitude (for 13 deg (2min is negligible) for 2hours 36 min.
After adding 21min for ( 1min 31sec difference in our birth time)
|14||3-18-05 Means Our Ascendant is in Cancer at 18 deg 05 min. Or longitude of the Ascendant is 3s-18d-05m|
Now let us find the longitudes of the planets for 18-5-2004. In Ephemeris normally sayana longitudes of the planets are given for GMT 00-00 hrs, so we will take it for India at 5-30 AM. We have to deducted the Ayanamsha for the date from this longitude. Now a days Nirayana longitudes are given in Lahiri’s Ephemeris. We can use it, as it is. Only correction we have to do is adding planetary motion for the time elapsed after 5-30 AM to our birth time. Here birth time is used in IST only. Our Birth time is 11-15 Am – (05-30 time zone) =
|1||Suns Longitude for 18-5-2004.||01||03||28||40|
|Daily Motion of Sun||00||00||57||48|
|Ratio between time difference 5h45m and day 24h is 5-45/24 or 345m/1440 m. = 0.240.
It should be added to the longitude given for 5-30AM.
|Actual longitude of the Sun at Birth.||01||03||42||01|

Now we have the longitude of Ascendant and all planets. Now we have to enter it into the horoscope. Ephemeris gives only Rahu’s longitude. We have added 180 deg to get Ketu longitude.
South Indian Chart——–North Indian Chart
|With the help of this Chart we have cast all other divisional and other charts.|
Casting of horoscope by Almanac Method.
Before casting the horoscope using Indian Almanacs we should know the some of the basics of the Indian system.
- Day starts from Sun rise and lasts up to next Sun rise. So there is an difference of about 6 hours to slandered time.
- In Indian system time is measured in Ghati and Vighati. Conversion to Hrs is One Ghati=24 Minutes and
One Vighati = 24 seconds. Day or 24 Hrs=60 ghati.
- Indian system observes the planetary postion on quarters of star,called nakshatra pada, because it relates to Navamsha chart, which is considered to be an important chart. And always appended to Sign chart ( Rashi chart). To cast other divisional charts only planetary longitudes are computed to deg, and min etc. and it is known as Amsha, Kala, Vikala etc. But its measurement is same as in case of Deg, min, sec.
- Indian system follows Nirayana system so year starts on Mesha sankranthi day ( Sun enetering Aries). We know that earth is shifting towards west at the rate of about 50.2 secs of arc. But Indian system takes a point aligned with polar star at the end of Revathi star, or exactly 180 deg opposite to chitra star. So it is fixed.( Nirayana). Difference between the actual point where earth is on equinox day to this polar point is known as Ayanamsha. All planets position is calculated to the quarter of Star and Almanac contains these details when exactly a planet enters quarter of a star.
- Duration of Ascendant is calculated with relation to duration for Shrilanka which is considered as center of earth. From that duration of Ascendant is calculated for different places in India, particularly to the place for which an Almanac is cast. Normally Indian astrologers formerly in a habit of using the Duration of the ascendant given in the Almanac which they use. This gives wrong ascendants many a time.
- Duration of ascendant for Shri Lanka as given by ancients is like this.
|Sign||Duration in vighati||Ghati||Vighati||Hours||Minute|
On the day when Sun is exactly on the latitude of the your city a pole of 12 inches is buried perpendicularly in the ground and its shadow is measured exactly at noon. Length of the shadow in inches is known as Phalabha. It is multiplied by 10 get 1st figure, divide the first figure by three get 2nd figure, multiply the phalabha by 8 get the 3rd figure. Get the average of these 3 figures it is known as Charakhanda. If you deduct charakhandaa figure (in vighati) in Lankan ascendant duration you will get the duration of the Ascendant for your village or city. Method itself shows it is not very accurate but fairly good.
- Indian Horoscope therefore contains the Panchanga details of the day of Birth. Here special results ( Phalas) are predicted to each of them, like Star, Week day, Yoga, Karana, Month, fortnight, and Season, Ayana, Year.
- So for casting the horoscope by Indian Almanac method let us first note down the details of Almanac for the day of Birth 18-5-2004.
- Year- Tarana samvatsara, Vasanta Ruthu, Vaishakha / (4th day of Taurus month,) Krishna paksha, Tuesday, Amavasya thithi, ending time 11-1 gh (on 19th). Star –Bharani,( Moon star) ending time 30gh. -59vigh. Yoga –Shobhana –ending time 58-53gh.Karana –Chatushpada. Sun rise 5-57-15; Sun set 18-35-1.
- First of all we have to find out the ascendant point at birth. For this we have to know the duration of the ascendant for the city of interest.
- Duration of Scendant for Bangalore is like this.
Now let us find the ascendant and planetary position on the day of birth. 18-5-2004 at 11-15.AM. First step is to convert the time into ghati and vighati elapsed up to the time of birth after sun rise for Bangalore.
|1||Time of birth||11||15||00|
|2||Local time at Bangalore -19min 36 sec||10||55||24|
|3||Sun rise on 18-5-2004||05||57||15|
|4||Difference in duration. In hrs||04||58||09|
|5||Duration in Ghati||12||47||30|
|6||Duration of Taurus is||05||03||00|
|7||Sun takes 30 days to traverse one sign. Sun in 3days traverses 5-03/30×3 or303/30×3 vighatis elapsed-||00||30||18|
|8||On the day of birth at Sunrise remaining duration of Taurus is||04||32||42|
|9||Duration of Gemini +||05||28||00|
|10||Duration of Cancer +||05||23||00|
|12||Total is greater than our time of birth. (12-47-30). So at time of birth Cancer is rising. The remaining time in Cancer at birth is=(15-23-43)-( 12-47-30)||02||36||12|
|13||If we convert the time into deg.at 10vighati per deg.||Deg
|14||That is our ascendant is at Cancer 15deg 36 min.|
|15||Now we have to find out the position of the Moon at the time of birth. Ashvini Ending time 0n 17-5-2004||24||30||00|
|16||Remaining time is of Bharani on 17-5-2004 ( 60-24-30)||35||30||00|
|17||Bharani ending time on the day of birth 18-5-2004||30||59||00|
|18||Total Duration of Bharani||66||29||00|
|19||¼ Duration of Bharani is||16||37||00|
|20||Bharani elapsed up to time of birth 35-30-00+ 12-47-30||48||17||30|
|21||Bharani 1+2+3 quarters =||49||51||00|
|22||So our birth is at 3rd quarter of Bharani|
Planetary details are taken from almanac. Naksatra details given below.
With above information we can cast Rashi kundali ( D-1 Chart) as well as Navamsha kundali ( D-9). For casting Navamsha kundali we should understand how it is cast. From Aries onwards to cancer, nine divisions of sign are given each sign from Aries to Sagittarius, Caprocorn to Virgo, Libra to gemini, and Cancer to Pisces. This completes 4 signs. This again repeated for each 4 signs further. Or it said in another way, For Moveable signs Navamsha starts from the same sign, For fixed signs it starts from 9th sign from it, and for Dual signs it starts from 5th sign from it.
More over we should know 9 quarters of each sign contains which of the quarters of stars. So I will give the below table for this.
|Deg From||Deg to||Sign name with quarters of star|
|1||Ashvini||00-00||13-20||Aries 1 to 4 qutr|

|36||Revathi||346-41||360-00||Pisces 1-4 qurt.|
With these information we can cast the rashi chart and navamsha chart.
Here we can easily find out that in ascendant there is a difference of more than 2deg. This is due to the approximation used in this method. But modern Almanac editors give more accurate longitudes using ephemeris. So now it is also possible to cast more accurate charts using almanac also.
To find out exact deg of longitude of a planet following procedure is used. For eg: Sun enters Kittika 2nd quarter on 17th at 50ghati 33 vighati. He leaves krittika 2 quarter on 21st at 18ghati. 13 vighati. Our birth is on 18th at 12-47-30.
So time elapsed up to time of birth is 60-00 – 50-33= 9-27+ 12-47-30= 22G.-14.5Vi. Total Duration of Sun in Krittika 2nd pada. 9-27+ 60+60+60+18-13= 207G-40Vi. So Sun traverses 3deg 20min in 207 ghati 40vighati. Then in 22ghati 14 vighati he traverses = 22-14/207-40×3-20=21.5 minutes. So if we add 21.5 minutes to the longitude of Krittika 2nd pada that is 33-20 we get actual longitude of the Sun at the time of birth. That is 33-41.5. or 3-41.5 in Taurus. Like this we can calculate actual longitudes of all planets.
